Module Overview

Green roofs (GRs) and green walls (GWs) offer a range of environmental and social benefits. They can reduce urban heat island impacts, improve air quality, provide natural insulation and absorb stormwater, alleviating pressure on urban drainage systems. They enhance the urban ecosystem by creating habitat for wildlife and supporting pollinators, and they create spaces for social interaction, recreation and relaxation. They also look great! In this module, we discuss the critical role soil properties such as density, weight, air filled porosity and water holding capacity play in determining the performance of GRs and GWs. Optimising soil properties is essential when designing and considering maintenance requirements for GRs and GWs and will ensure the long-term sustainability of these projects.
