We are pleased to announce that our Director of Science and founder of SESL Australia, Simon Leake has been awarded with the 2024 Inaugural SSA NSW Soil Consultants Award. This is a very exciting time for SESL Australia and we thank the Soil Science Australia committee for recognising Simon's significant work on the international project to prepare usable soil and regolith to create King Salman Park, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2024.
This expansive 750-hectare park, once a desert air force base, presented severe soil challenges, including saline, gypsiferous, and impermeable soils. Simon and his team were chosen from an international pool of experts to lead the soil program, transforming the barren desert landscape into a thriving urban green space. Through innovative methods, they tackled the soil issues while minimising environmental impacts, such as reducing carbon emissions during soil treatment. The project's success not only benefits Saudi Arabia but also provides valuable insights for managing difficult soils in Australia and other arid regions.
Congratulations, Simon. The entire SESL Australia team is proud to stand alongside you, supporting your remarkable work and dedication to advancing soil science on a global scale. Your efforts are an inspiration to us all, and we are honored to be a part of the positive impact you continue to make for the environment and the world.
A heartfelt thank you to Soil Science Australia for acknowledging the dedication and contributions of soil scientists across the country.
