Module Overview

Plants require a balance of essential nutrients, including macro and micro nutrients, to support their growth, development, reproduction and defence mechanisms. The availability of these nutrients depends on various factors, including pH, organic matter content and climatic variability. Nutrient cycling is just one way soil fertility is maintained. This module explores the essential elements and nutrients required for plant growth, including macronutrients, micronutrients, and trace elements. It examines plant tolerance to varying nutrient levels and explores the nutrient cycling and bioaccumulation processes in both natural and built landscapes. Additionally, the module reviews the properties and applications of different fertilisers to guide their effective use under optimal conditions.
