Module Overview

Often when soil is tested for planting suitability, there is a major focus on the chemical attributes. However, the physical limitations of a soil are just as, if not more, important, as they directly influence water movement, root penetration, and overall soil structure—factors essential for healthy plant growth. In this module, we discuss the physical properties of the solid components of soil and the critical role these properties play in determining its suitability for various purposes. We explore how you can determine many of these physical properties through field observation including texture, structure, colour.
