Module Overview

As urban populations expand, the volume of waste generated continues to increase. In response, innovative urban development practices are increasingly adopting advanced methods for extracting valuable materials from construction, demolition, and organic waste. These recovered materials have become a critical component in delivering cost-effective, environmentally responsible urban development. This course provides an overview of the types of common recovered materials used in urban development, the legislative frameworks that govern how recovered materials in Australia are processed, and how they can be utilised for engineering and landscaping purposes. Upon successful completion of this module, participants will have gained knowledge and skills to: - Understand the role of recovered materials in urban construction and landscaping, and their contribution to sustainability and circular economy principles. - Evaluate the environmental and economic benefits of using recovered materials, including cost savings and resource conservation. - Navigate the legislative and regulatory frameworks governing recovered materials. - Assess the suitability of recovered materials for engineering and landscaping applications by considering their properties and intended use. - Implement best practices for using recovered materials safely and effectively.
