We are excited to announce the launch of SESL Australia’s new suite of online learning modules, now accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).
These modules have been carefully designed to provide professionals across all disciplines involved in soils, horticulture and natural resources with insights grounded in decades of SESL Australia’s experience and industry leadership.

A Glimpse into the Modules
Our library of 12 modules spans a diverse range of topics in soil, plant, and environmental science, providing both foundational understanding and advanced technical expertise. A few highlights include:
Recovered Materials: Engineering & Landscaping: Learn how recovered materials from construction and demolition waste are reshaping sustainable urban development, and gain strategies for assessing their suitability in engineering and landscaping contexts.
Green Roofs and Green Walls (Basics & Advanced): Explore how to design and manage living infrastructure that mitigates the urban heat island effect, improves biodiversity, and enhances liveability in cities. From plant selection to lightweight soil mix design, these modules cover both introductory principles and advanced technical applications.
Trees in an Urban Environment: Discover the critical role of tree interactions, urban challenges like compaction and contamination, and best practices for sustainable tree management and preservation.
Soil in the Urban Environment: Dive into the unique challenges of urban soils, from classification to contamination, and explore strategies for rehabilitation and long-term management.
Basics of Soil Chemistry, Physics, and Biology: Build a solid foundation in the essential disciplines underpinning soil science. These modules explore the chemical, physical, and biological processes that shape soil health, plant growth, and ecosystem resilience.
Pedology: Gain an introduction to the science of soil formation, classification, and spatial distribution, with applied case studies on how soils are shaped by climate, topography, and human impacts.
Plant Nutrition & Physiology: Understand the essential elements plants need to grow, adapt, and thrive. These modules unpack how plants interact with soils, water, and nutrients to support both natural and constructed landscapes.
Why These Modules Matter
