Thinking Outside the Box!

Not all boxes are created equal!  In fact, little thought goes into the packaging of some of our everyday items.  Parcels delivered from international destinations may not have the same rigorous manufacturing requirements that we have here in Australia.

Our laboratory technicians routinely receive and prepare samples for analysis such as soil, compost, sand, water, sludge and plant tissue.  Recently, we received a request to test a variety of packaging materials for heavy metal content to demonstrate compliance with Australian importation requirements.

Our typical sample preparation methods could not be used for many of these packaging matrices which included cardboard, foam, desiccant bags and plastic strapping.  Working with these materials presented the need for a different approach to sample preparation for heavy metal analysis.  However, our ever-innovative laboratory staff got to work on adapting our sample preparation methods; successfully preparing the samples for analysis, and showcasing the flexibility and technical expertise of our laboratory technicians and R&D team.
